Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.
That line, usually attributed to Einstein, is one we lean on often. It is also a fair description of the current dental technology environment.
Multi-location groups have spent the last several years buying. Patient communications, imaging, AI scheduling, revenue cycle tools, analytics layers, phone systems, membership platforms. Each purchase was rational on its own. Together they produced a stack nobody fully mapped and nobody fully owns.
At Relay we run a Tech Stack Diagnosis for leaders of multi-location dental groups. The goal is simple: give them a clear picture of what they have, what it really costs, and what to do next.
What we keep finding
- Vendors overcharging by 15 to 25 percent through contract drift. Rates that crept, locations that were added and never renegotiated, auto-renewals that took effect without a review.
- Groups running 40 to 60 percent of the features they are paying for. The rest was bought, configured once, and never adopted.
- Duplicate feature sets across five to seven different products. Three tools that all send patient reminders. Two that both do reporting. Nobody chose this on purpose; it accumulated.
- Multiple practice management systems across locations. Which quietly taxes every other decision, every integration, and every report the group tries to build.
- Underutilized functions built natively into the practice management system. Capability the group already owns, already pays for, and is buying again from someone else.
What clarity produces
The immediate result is usually cost savings and a reduction in vendor count. Those are real and they are easy to measure, which is why they get the attention.
But the more valuable outcome is the one that is harder to put on an invoice. Seizing the opportunity cost. Every duplicate tool, every underused license, and every system nobody trusts is consuming attention that could go toward the two or three things that would actually move the business. Clearing the clutter frees that attention.
The clutter is real. So is the opportunity sitting inside it.
